Remix P – Phoenix is based on a Batik sarong, featuring phoenix birds (Burung Hong) surrounded by floral motifs and a delicate craquelure pattern. In Javanese visual culture, the phoenix symbolizes rebirth, elegance, and resilience.
Painted coloured circles have been added to the original batik. These abstract forms introduce a new visual rhythm and overlay a contemporary layer onto the historic textile. The choice of colors is connected to associations of Java: spices, flowers, soil, indigo, coffee, fire, and gold.
Through the combination of existing motifs and geometric forms, a composition emerges in which tension and coherence coexist. The work acts as a visual encounter between traditional craft and contemporary visual language, in which the past remains visible while being reactivated.
