This piece is associated with the growing awareness of the environment and the need for preservation – the story of the work done underground, the roots and the tubers, highlighting the beauty and diversity in the undergrowth.
Part of the Conserved Specimen series, Thistle, Borage, and Stachys are depicted with oversized roots in a raw and dramatic presentation. The plants represent nature in a vulnerable manner. Carola wanted it to look as if the plants and roots were pulled out of the ground, with the soil almost still attached.
