Winti is a spiritual and religious belief system originating from West Africa, particularly among the descendants of enslaved Africans in Suriname.
It combines West-African beliefs with elements of Spiritism, and indigenous Amerindian traditions. In Winti culture, the colors blue and white represent the Kabra, the ancestors. Blue refers to the West African royal lineage. White symbolizes death and purity. Since the 17th century, Delft Blue pottery has quickly become an iconic representation of Dutch culture.
What happens when these two traditions come together in one object?
Following this question, artist Boris van Berkum created the Kabra Blue collection.
Hand-painted by master-painter Diana van Zeijl (atelier Heinen Delfts Blauw Delft, Netherlands )
Kabra Blauw is part of the ongoing collaboration between artist Boris van Berkum and Winti priestess Marian Markelo.
