FROZEN TEAR

At first, Frozen Tear looks like a piece of cardboard ripped in two. Why in the world would someone want to buy a bronze lamp that looks like a piece of cardboard? Then a gleam at the base of the lamp caught the attention for a closer look. It wasn’t a cardboard lamp at all, but a bronze sculpture.

The irony secreted in Reinier Bosch‘s bronze lamp may have crept in while he wasn’t looking, as it were, but it is the most interesting aspect of his design. It makes us think about shifting relationships across the world, about the relativity of price and value and, consequently, about the sense and nonsense of so many ‘design art’ objects.

One of the Frozen Tear edition is exhibited in Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (Texas).
